Limit Setting with Escalating Consequences

A consequence should be logical and fit the infraction in terms of magnitude and perseverance.

Hence, it is important to develop a range of responses, from small to large. The general rule of thumb in limit setting is to apply the law of least resistance: start small and escalate only as necessary to extinguish the behavior. Knowing that we have a series of escalating consequences available enables us to remain calm yet firm and convincing when addressing inappropriate behavior. Remaining calm is essential to setting limits and establishing credibility and authority while preserving relationships of regard and respect.

Here is an example of a hierarchy of escalating consequences, which we explain in detail in the following sections.

Body language of meaning business/poker

Acknowledging a change in behavior and offering help

Quiet time

Verbal warning, privately delivered

Reeducation (cafeteria school)

Hold up a mirror (Simone story to follow)

Pulling the card

Letter home taped to desk

Account for behavior in writing

Time out in classroom

Phone call home with student reporting in teacher’s presence what happened

Parent conference with home reporting and consequences; contract signed by teacher, student, and parent

In-school suspension

Saturday school

Parent accompanies student to classes for a day as a condition for readmission (with parent supervision finishing work in isolation)
